Logo Design Brief

Pikaia when launched will take you to a website where you use your own environmental values to search for the goods and services you consume.
The logo will be used on:
• our business cards – portrait format;
• website; and
• print media
Our Website
The website pages follow the style and structure standards recommended by Nielsen Norman Group (http://www.nngroup.com/). The logo will need to be similarly clean.
The text on the site will reflect universal browser standards. Pages are on simple white backgrounds with monochrome black text. Fonts used will be:
• Arial
• Arial Black
• Tahoma
• Verdana
Colour will be introduced to the site through the use of:
• the logo
• borders
• small icons as clickable links; and
• buttons.
Engagement
• We don’t want to waste your time
• Send us only what you think are the best of your designs.
• Don’t send us every idea you come up with
• Do not send us a design in multiple colour options.
• Send us the design you think works best.
• We are looking for quality, not cacophony.
• If in doubt send a query first.
• Any green Pikaia logos will be rejected outright!
• We will endeavour to be clear, concise, and importantly timely and responsive to your queries

The Logo
We would like a design with two versions. The option to:
• stand alone, clean of any associated text; and
• integrated with our name ‘Pikaia’

The Logo Image
Pikaia gracilens is an extinct animal known from the Middle Cambrian and is one of the oldest known ancestors of modern vertebrates. Feel free to look it up and be inspired.
The Cambrian Period (542 to 488.3 million years ago) marked a profound change in life on Earth; prior to the Cambrian era, life was on the whole small and simple. The Cambrian explosion as it is known represents the rapid diversification of life forms, and is a period in earth’s history recognised as being responsible for many of the first representatives of modern groups of species including (ultimately) humans. We like it because it Pikaia has one of the first known examples of a backbone, and embracing change requires you have a bit of backbone and because we are now in an unprecedented phase of consumption, population growth and species extinction so we like the parallels

Last Thing
• Be Creative – Outside the box is where things happen
• Be Imaginative – Don’t limit your options
• Fun – have it designing our logo.
• Fresh – This is a web-based tool. The logo ought look like tomorrow

Hi all,

Pikaia does want a simple, clean design yes, but we would also like some personality, something unique.  An original design that can be instantly recognised as associated with our brand.

Words with an image can mean something or be so bland as to mean nothing.  We are looking for the injection of creativity, originality, energy.  The name is taken from a fossil, a very early representative of humanity, in a time of explosive growth and change. We think there are parallels with modern life, consumption and today's rapid change.

We are a site that allows consumers to search for goods and services using their own environmental values.  When someone comes to the site the logo needs to make sense.

If a 'swish' with text is the preferred approach we would love to see a new take on it.  We now have several designs that combine a simple swish and font.

We liked the extra effort made on design #239480 although we do not think this design is well balanced yet, but the injection of personality and original motif design is appreciated.

Hi, our thanks for the ongoing submissions.  We are not sure if it is a consequence of the colour of the Design Crowd website or if we have missed something in our brief? but we are struck by the number of designs that are being submitted with muted tones  - blue appears to be particularly popular.

We would very much welcome a broader exploration of the colour wheel in the designs submitted.

Thanks
