Logo Design Brief

Ludeme Games is a video game and board game development studio based in the US.

The word "Ludeme" comes from "Ludic" meaning to play, and "Meme" meaning an idea that spreads. Together they mean a primary element of play - a 'particle' in the gameplay design universe. Ludemes are the basic ideas and rules of gameplay.

Our manifesto stands on three principles: "Play is important" (for learning), "Respect the Player", and "Share".

The first principle "Play is important" comes from a quote by Raph Koster: "Games aren’t stories. Games aren’t about beauty or delight. Games aren’t about jockeying for social status. They stand, in their own right, as something incredibly valuable. Fun is about learning in a context where there is no pressure, and that is why games matter."

The second principle "Respect the Player" comes from a quote by Jonathan Blow: "respect the player as an intelligent person, who can figure things out and who wants to discover things, or come to understand more things than they knew at the start of the game,"

And lastly, "Share" comes from a quote by John F. Kennedy "A rising tide lifts all boats."

Our games will try to teach behaviors that will be relevant in the modern environment. When players absorb strategies and ideas through our ludemes they will find themselves with a newfound intuitive understanding of modern concepts/problems that they face.

I you use game components (great idea in general), please refrain from using luck-based items such as cards, dice, or anything that might be associated with gambling. Thanks,

I have come to understand some things better by viewing your many excellent submissions.

1: "Ludeme" should be more prominent text than "Games" because this is the more distinct part of the trademark.

2: Where "Ludeme" should have the focus for the text, that leaves the remainder of the composition to communicate "Games" effectively by some other means (a must).

3. It is important to consider how easy it is to read both on a large and small scale, and on both a black and white background.

4. I'm tending to pick designs that feel alive.

To those who are using the 'play' symbol (a little triangle): I am glad that you read my brief and symbolically incorporated our manifesto! Thanks!

However... I feel that the play symbol is ambiguous to the viewer unless they are already thinking games - it could mean music or video just as easily and is probably more commonly associated with these.

We need imagery that passes the 'grandma test'. Even grandma looks at this and thinks of games and fun (even though that's not the target market).
