Who we are -
The Society for Museum Archaeology has existed since 1975, and is the Subject Specialist Network (SSN) for archaeology in museums in the UK. We are a membership organisation open to all who work with museum archaeology collections in the UK. The Society hosts a conference once a year, and publishes a biannual newsletter as well as annually publishing the Journal of the Society for Museum Archaeology. We receive funding from Arts Council England (ACE).
The Society recently (2013) changed its name from ‘The Society of Museum Archaeologists’ to ‘The Society for Museum Archaeology’. Museum staff across the sector are being asked to look after larger and more varied collections than before, hence there are fewer people looking after archaeology only collections. This name change better reflects the role of the Society in representing the work done across the archaeological museum sector, rather than being a society only for those who identify themselves as ‘Museum Archaeologists’.
The Society’s Objectives –
To promote the interests of archaeology in museums throughout the United Kingdom.
We do this by…
• Promoting museum involvement in all aspects of archaeology and emphasising the unique contribution of museums to the essential unity of the archaeological profession
• Promoting greater public understanding of the archaeological past and a fuller public appreciation of the importance of archaeology
• Campaigning for the acceptance of museums as guardians of a vital part of the nation's heritage and as the appropriate location for the storage and interpretation of all archaeological material
• Developing a coherent philosophy for the role of archaeologists in museums
We aim to achieve this by
• Acting as a pressure group within the museum profession and offering advice to the Museums Association and other national bodies on current issues of archaeological importance
• Encouraging closer relations with colleagues outside museums, and with other organisations involved in archaeology
• Working towards the improvement of all aspects of archaeological work in museums
The Society has male and female members in Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. Our subject specialism deals with the material remains of the whole span of human history in the UK, so from c1 million years ago up until almost the present day. Our members advise and discuss museum and archaeological issues with regional and national governments, including UK House of Commons and House of Lords Select Committees. The logo has to be suitable for use across multiple online platforms (website, social media etc), as well as for use in letterheads and official documents. It should be presentable in black and white and colour.
While not adverse to abstract symbolism (within reason) it should be easily distinguishable as the SMA. Despite the fact we deal with archaeology we do not want anything cliché, i.e. not Stonehenge, not Indiana Jones and not dusty displays. If you do decide to use an archaeological image as an inspiration please bear in mind the wide range of archaeological collections our members work with, i.e. a hand axe or a steam powered water mill might be too time period specific. Our members come from across the UK and so basing a logo on one ‘star object’ from one specific museum is not recommended (e.g. the Sutton Hoo helmet at the British Museum).
