Logo Design Brief
Design a new logo for Kigezi Mountains Coffee, a premium Ugandan coffee, that will be used on new packaging and other marketing material. We are looking for a bold new design (and slight name change) with this product re-launch.
Here's a bit of background about the company and coffee which might be helpful in thinking about the design...
Kigezi Mountains Coffee takes its name from a region in the southwest corner of Uganda, characterized by its beautiful green soaring peaks (the area has been called the "Switzerland of Uganda"), crisp air, plentiful sunshine and rich volcanic fertile soils which come from the Albertine Rift Valley.
These perfect conditions combine to produce prized speciality coffee beans with rich, complex flavors that mature slowly in the high-altitude mountain air.
More than 3,000 small-holder farmers from the Kigezi region grow the coffee that bear our name and they in turn benefit from the sales, community support and technical training of established cooperative.
Our company that produces Kigezi Mountains Coffee is a small, community-based enterprise that supports thousands of area farmers, their families and schools. The company name literally translates to "Yes we can" in the local tongue, which says a lot about what they do and what their focus remains.
Target Market(s)
The target market for Kigezi Mountains Coffee are people who love great coffee. And that love is not just defined by great defined by taste, but also from supporting a company and product that is community-minded and gives back to the thousands of small farmers who grow the beans in the mountains of southwestern Uganda.

Requirements
Must have
- 1. Words. Must include the words "Kigezi Mountains". The word "Coffee" may or may be used depending on how the design looks and the spacing. Would be interested in seeing designs that use and don't use the word "Coffee."
2. Colors. Must use strong colors and ones that evoke a sense of nature (mountains, river, sun), handmade, non-corporate, and personal. The colors from this logo will go on the influence the colors chosen for the coffee bag packaging, so they should be strong, bold and eye-catching. We have not chosen specific colors--you can decide--but the Ugandan flag for reference is red, yellow and black. We also loves the green and blues that evoke the Kigezi are land and sky.
3. Sizing. This logo will be featured prominently on the front part of a coffee bag packaging (250g/9oz and 500g/18oz--even small sample packs) so should look good on that size on either kraft paper or matte laminate. It will also be used in Web, print and other marketing collateral.
Nice to have
- Something evocative of the mountain region and/or Uganda would be nice. An ideal design will capture a sense of the location in the mountains and/or Uganda. We hope that the high-altitude/mountain locale and their ability to produce high-quality, specialty coffee beans to be part of the visual if possible. Coffee is a very competitive market so hoping the strength of our beans and their location comes through.
Should not have
- Cliche or over-used African visuals--Acacia tree, elephant, sunset, etc. Also be wary of the easily over-used coffee themes (beans, cups, etc.), however, if tastefully used they can be very powerful.
The design should NOT be too slick or look too corporate. This is not a snooty coffee, but one for people who appreciate drinking a good cup and helping a community of farmers at the same time by making the purchase.
Lastly, we want the design to look natural and genuine, but not "cutesy" with fluffy fonts or silly designs. Yes, we are small and focused on the community, but the coffee is really, REALLY good and we want that to be obvious in the design.
