Logo Design Brief

We want a fun logo!

RocketGene is a new company researching fast new geeky computer algorithms to help process DNA sequences faster and better. It's all about "Next generation" and speed. The company's name and product is all about DNA, but we love the Rocket name because it is visual and gives a feeling of both FAST and modern.

We're looking for a combination logo (text and simple graphic). It'd be something to put at the top corner of our website, on business cards, in the About screen of our software, trade show shirts, etc. It can be color.. but it's usually easier to deal with just a few colors in a logo, NOT 3D CGI full toned images that are hard to print. We haven't picked any company color theme, so you're free to use what you think works well. Blue tones are nice but certainly not required.

Shape and aspect ratio are up to you, but a longer horizontal rectangular shape is usually easier to use than a square on things like business cards or titlebars.

The name "RocketGene" obviously immediately lends itself to a rocket, and we always smile when we think of classic 50's scifi rockets! Flash Gordon style, not Apollo or Shuttle. http://www.davidgould.com/Studios/Images/Exluna_Thumb.gif


DNA is the actual core of our business.. and it's NOT REQUIRED to use DNA in the logo, perhaps your creative mind could mix it with a rocket theme! You could also wow us with some DNA-inspired logo and skip the rocket if you can make it work. The iconic DNA spiral comes to mind as the obvious starting image.

DNA on a computer is just a huge huge file of the 4 letters A, T, C and G, looking like random "CATTCAGTCATAATGATTGGATTACG..." Perhaps that might inspire some graphic as well, but again, such an inclusion is NOT REQUIRED... just a brainstorm to help your creative imagery. Our software is mostly all about searching and printing these big strings of these 4 letters, so all of our users will have those 4 letters burned in their brain. But a string of "ATCG" is not logo friendly, so again this is just for information/inspiration and is not a requirement to use.

The name is "RocketGene" but you can change the typography to be monocase, or lowercase the "G", or even split the words if it makes the logo flow better. Font choice is up to you.

Target Market(s)

Geeky scientists and overworked biology grad students . They'll all be computer geeks, not white coated surgeons.

Should not have

• We're not uptight suit-wearing managers, so fun is OK. But be careful not to make it feel like a toy or for children.
  
  My own unsuccessful doodles sometimes got the negative comment of "that looks like a sports team logo."
