Graphic Design Brief
I need a book cover for my book The Commitment Blueprint. It needs to catch your attention and even though I dont see how you can use faces in a blueprint image, I do like how they catch your eye. so maybe 2 images of people they can be unisex images in a blueprint format with my title and subtitle and my name and the spine and the back all ready to make a KDP book cover. I see it as a blue theme with white blueprint imagery and also a commitment theme. Here are the details from KDP: File Format and Structure
Format: Single PDF file (preferred for print). KDP converts other formats (e.g., DOCX) but PDF ensures accuracy.
Structure: One continuous image including:
Back cover (with space for barcode if not provided by KDP).
Spine (text/logo if ≥79 pages; otherwise, leave blank).
Front cover.
No Separate Files: Everything must be in one flattened PDF—no layers or editable elements.
Barcode: Leave a white 2x1.2-inch (5x3 cm) space on the back cover (bottom right). KDP adds it automatically unless you provide your own (upload as a separate image).
2. Color Mode and Profiles
Color Space: RGB (Red-Green-Blue). KDP does not support CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black) for print-on-demand, as it uses digital inkjet/toner printers optimized for RGB.
No Color Profiles: Do not embed ICC profiles (e.g., sRGB)—they're automatically removed and can cause unexpected shifts.
No Spot Colors: Avoid Pantone or specialty inks; they're incompatible with KDP's process.
Color Variance Tip: Expect slight shifts due to printer differences. Test with a proof copy. For best results, design in sRGB and preview in Adobe Acrobat.
3. Resolution and Image Quality
DPI (Dots Per Inch): Minimum 300 DPI at final print size. Lower resolution causes pixelation or rejection.
File Size: Up to 650 MB, but aim for under 50 MB for faster uploads.
Compression: Use JPEG or TIFF for images within the PDF; avoid heavy compression that degrades quality.
4. Dimensions and Bleed
Total Width Calculation: Back cover width + Spine width + Front cover width + Bleed (0.125 inches/3.2 mm on all sides).
Front/Back: Matches your trim size (e.g., 6x9 inches = 6" width each).
Spine: Calculated via KDP's tool (depends on page count, ink type, and paper; e.g., 0.066" for a 100-page premium color book).
Height: Trim height + 0.25" (6.4 mm) total bleed (0.125" top + 0.125" bottom).
Example for 6x9" Trim (Common Size):ComponentWidthHeightFront Cover6"9"Back Cover6"9"Spine (varies)~0.06–0.5"9"Total Cover (w/ Bleed)~12.25–13"9.25"
Bleed: Essential for full-bleed designs (e.g., backgrounds extending to edges). Extend artwork 0.125" beyond trim lines; safe text/logo must be 0.125" inside trim.
Trim Sizes: Standard options like 5x8", 6x9", 8.5x11". Custom sizes allowed (4–8.5" wide, 6–11.69" tall), but check page count limits (24–828 pages for premium color).
5. Content and Design Guidelines
Safe Zone: Keep critical elements (text, logos) at least 0.125" from edges to avoid trimming errors.
Spine Text: Centered, readable font (≥8 pt); runs vertically (bottom-to-top for LTR languages). Minimum 79 pages required.
Finish: Glossy (shiny, vibrant) or matte (subtle, non-reflective). Glossy enhances colors but shows fingerprints.
Avoid: Borders that could crop, low-contrast text, or designs assuming offset printing quality.
