On the back "5 things you can do NOW to look after your Mental Health''
1. Remain connected to supportive people. Spend time with and reach out to people who are a positive influence on you. Having a network of good relationships and taking part in social activities improves confidence, wellbeing and keeps our mind busy.
2. Be aware of negative thoughts. Thoughts arent necessarily facts and it can be easy to let our mind get away on us. Be aware of your negative thoughts and try not to give them power. Come up with a strategy so that when you notice yourself thinking negatively you can implement the strategy that overrides the thought, practice it regularly and overtime you’ll be the master of your mind, rather than your mind being the master of you!
3. Develop a daily routine that prioritises something you enjoy. Make YOU your non negotiable. We all lead busy lives, but its important to do something for ourselves that we enjoy and can look forward to. Taking a bath, coffee with a friend, a walk, reading before bed, gardening. Its nice to look back on your day and see we have done something for ourselves.
4. Exercise, movement is key! Daily exercise is best however, its been proven that as little as 45 mins of exercise three times a week can lessen feelings of depressions, anxiety and stress. Find something you enjoy doing, a gym class where the session is planned for you, walk in do your exercise, walk out and get on with your day, walking, running, dancing, just be sure to get it done. The benefits are endless. Gradually build it into your routine, exercise with a friend, it helps keep you both accountable and its more fun too!
5. Eat well. Our brain and gut are connected, this is known as the Gut Brain axis. Our GI tract releases neurotransmitters and hormones like serotonin and dopamine which affect brain function and mood. If the microbes in your gut are unbalanced it can lead to less production of the ‘happy hormones.’ Probiotics are key to balanced gut health, think probiotic yoghurts, kimchi, miso soup, sauerkraut or probiotic supplements. Vitamin D rich foods wil help too, eggs yolks, tuna, salmon. Lighten up on the sugary and processed food as these can inhibit the growth of good bacteria.
