Sound map app - Stepping into the mind of other people through sound
Add your question or comments below
Hello,
Really neat concept for the app!
I was wondering if more information about the size(Dimensions in pixels) and format for the illustration could be provided, and if some information could be provided about the the medium (Cover/Digital/print/website/app screen etc) and for what purpose the illustration will be used.
Also if there are any illustrations you like, it would help if any links could be provided.
Thankyou !
Hi,
thanks so much for your questions, I very much appreciate them.
For now I will be using the illustration mainly for presentations of the concept and showing the people what I hear in my head. So the size should be well suited to show on a powerpoint or related ways of representation so it should fit well on a A4 page.
As I know have seen already a couple of illustrations here are a couple of things to point out that I hope will help you.
- we need to see someone walking through a street
- since this is about experiencing our world through the acoustics, they need to have their eyes open as they are fascinated about what they hear and they simply need to see where they are walking.:)
- Make sure that we can feel from the image that they are walking through a space and the acoustic world changes. we see different things, signs for music, signs for words, other forms of sounds
- the sounds that the person hears have been created by numerous other people and so we are walking through the soul sound of other peoples life and their ideas
- Make it very cool, imagine the movie TRON, it doesn't need to be realistic in the way that we just see someone walking, it can be totally fantastical but it needs to give us the idea of being in soundscapes, the visuals needs to excite the people that this will be presented to and they need to hear sounds just by watching the image
- take us into a different world where we can hear the soul of other people
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions the elaborate description, I appreciate it very much.
I am left wondering a few things I was hoping you could please elaborate further on.
a) Reference to the Tron movie:
It conjures images of a retro futuristic environment, albeit dismal, dark and moody, with the only light radiating from neon light sources. From my understanding this dark and moody visual style and feel is not what you would like to portray, and my interpretation of the reference to the Tron movie is regarding a virtually simulated reality, materialising/phasing itself into our reality.
B) “we need to see someone walking through a street”:
Is there any preference of what gender the person is, and any preference of location where the person is walking.
C) “we see different things, signs for music, signs for words, other forms of sounds”
“walking through the soul sound of other peoples life and their ideas” :
Is it possible to elaborate further on these symbols and the lives of other people the listener will be sharing. That is, what sort of imagery should the “listener” be “experiencing”.
Eg. Are they visualising a breathtaking landscape with the sound of nature and birds ?
Are they walking through some exotic location,
Are they immersed into a festival or carnival like Mardi Gras, with costumes and confetti in the air ?
Are they on a hot air balloon flying through the clouds,
Are they at a beach listening to the seagulls and waves crashing on the shore.
Are they sitting at a roadside cafe in paris and having a conversation .. Etc
Is it not separate specific scenarios such as mentioned above,
but a mix of various random elements and symbols of sound and visuals?
Would love to hear your thoughts and how you have imagined it,
Many thanks again for your time and help.
You're terrific. I really love your questions!!!!
Just from the way you're asking I can't wait to see what you come up with.
a.
You're absolutely right. For me Ton isn't as dark but yes it's futuristic.
I think what it does to me is that it creates images of space that we can't locate to a specific place but it does give always the feeling that you walk through a space which is I think what I like about it.
b.
Gender: no, in fact it doesn't need to show any gender
Location: I will be first presenting this app to a city in Germany called Braunschweig but I find the look of many streets here quite boring.:) On the other hand I might also use this for other places, so again a location that isn't as specific is probably best which is why I thought if we can create a visual representation of someone walking through space might be cooler and more helpful to explain that this is not your usual app. On the other hand, I also do fear or am cautious that if it doesn't look at all like something that people feel comfortable with, they will simply deny the idea.
c.
Again, a great question, showing me that you're understanding what I am looking for.
I will elaborate a little bit more on your question to show you where I come from. I am both a composer, sound researcher and music psychotherapist. I have studied all my life connections between the mind and sound. My main research question is inventing a new form of musical diagnostic system in which we can learn more about how the mind works just through the way a person creates music and sounds.
With that I am also trying to find ways to do what I call "Sonification of the mind", creating a system that directly transforms data from EEG and other sources into an acoustic creation that helps diagnose a patients mental state/mental problems.
Another project of mine is recreating acoustic hallucinations...
All these ideas are in everything I am doing, even in the idea for this app.
So, just as I am trying to learn more about someone through their musical output, this app should transport us into other people's minds through the sounds/music/spoken texts that they have created and then uploaded in the app to specific places. We don't just listen to them at home but the idea (which of course can be also done and has been done in many other apps). Here I am wondering (and maybe this will in the end not really work the way I imagine it) if we can recreate the feeling that while you walk down a street, the world isn't anymore as it was before. you hear sounds and other things, you hear representations of people, you walk through their experiences and while doing that, you hopefully will also experience that you walk through the acoustic space of others. An acoustical universe of others.
So: if someone likes to upload sound of nature and birds, they can most certainly do that. Than that would be their specific way but that is just one way. So the sounds we are hearing will not and don't have to be natural.
The location that we are starting with isn't exotic at all, it's quite boring. It's in a town called Braunschweig/Germany.
Normal streets, normal buildings...
It's also not a specific or special festival or environment. It should be used every day they want and by everyone.
They will not fly, well at least for the moment.:) You hold your phone. The phone finds your location. You start walking through streets and while doing that, things acoustically change around you.
They would do that by themselves. The focus is on walking around and hearing how things change around you.
Again for now, it will not be on a beach, or in Paris. We have to start small and test the idea first. If that works, we might open up for more cities/Countries.
And for your last question about the scenarios, yes, it can be anything.
Imagine yourself at your place. You go outside the house. You turn on the app, put on your headphones and then you can hear things.
Maybe 10 meters are a spoken poet, the next 10 meters maybe a weird sound that you can't really make up where it comes from, then another 10 meters and you hear some song made by the people.
Finally, one more thought.
For a moment just imagine it from a visual point.
You walk down a street. Your eye needs to be directed. In can't look back, only in front and you need to focus on what you want to see.
One moment you might focus on a bee, one moment you might focus on a couple standing at a corner but every couple of meters, something excites you visually on your walk. You might see some graphitti, that looks very cool, or a group of people dancing in another part of the street. The one thing that all of these moments have together, is that they represent the person or people that you're walking by or though. Their bodies exist either in person or through expressions around you.
That embodiment of people, the feeling that they exist there in a form, is what I am hoping to create. Peoples embodiment through sound. We feel there is someone existing but in sound.
I hope this helps.
Very excited to see what you come up with but again your questions feel that you're on the right track.
Thank you very much yet again, this has been very helpful.
I am very captivated by this concept, and very intrigued (and impressed) with your work and the research into sound you have mentioned. This is excellent, I can now visualise the story to be communicated and look forward to submitting a few concepts asap.
I sense, in a way this app is a form of artistic expression as well, which others get to experience by way of an augmented reality experience, linked to specific locations. The social aspect is very interesting as well, where the creators can express themselves in a new way. A very original concept, and sounds fun to add! I hope we all get a chance to experience it.
Thank you again, and hope to post back soon with some visuals.
Hello,
Regarding Contest Brief #3959654 (DesId #26801316)
I read though your brief and though the comments. I thought about illustrating what you asked for but was struggling on showing the person walking down a street, I was looking way too busy. So I decided to make you an animation, I can't upload animations on here. I've uploaded to a drive but you'll have to message for the link as this website doesn't allow to post links in comments. Couple things too bare in mind about this animation. 1 the full black building is transparent, this means I can something different after each time the girl walks past Eg. Tron world, a beach, basically I can put any scene in you want. 2 the quality of the isn't full as this is a pre-visualistion. everything isn't final it can all be changed. 3 this is 12 seconds long but it perfectly loops so can be for along as you want.. I get this total not what you've asked for but I think it suits your purpose a-lot more.
Couldn't Message you so here I am,
Regards Will
Hi,
I am not sure what you would need from me so you can send me the link.
Can you put it on YouTube? maybe you can put the link in separate parts so it doesn't appear as I link and I just put it together?
I am generally not opposed to an animation. I have received quite a few of illustrations so far and I would agree with you that it might be tricky to do it all in just one image.

I've upload it on this link above. Just delete the spaces I put in the link.
Hi,
it worked without any problems.:)
I like that we can see a person walking around.
The big part missing now is the experience that the woman hears different sound spaces as she walks around.
At the moment I can only see a person walking.
I would also need know that she is changing the sound with her phone and that we can clearly see headphones.
Some musical or other signs showing that there are sounds around her.
Thanks
thanks, I'll get to work on this now and bring it to life.
