Logo Design Brief

We are a letterpress/bookbinding studio and are going to be publishing a small number of handmade books each year. We need a logo that will end up as a brass stamp to be embossed in gold at the bottom of our books’ spines. The design has to be a fairly clean black and white. It’s difficult to have too much detail on a brass stamp. The black lines will be printed in gold leaf. Since it’s on the spine, the design needs to be vertical. We’re picturing two Cairn Terriers on top of a stack of books.

Requirements

Must have

• Logo is going on the spine of books 32–120 pages—must be able to be seen clearly as a small space. We want a combination of two Cairn terriers and books. Black and white image only—no shading. Vertical design—it will end up on a tool that will be on the spine of a thin book. Look at other publisher´s marks on books as an example.

Nice to have

• We are looking for a design that reflects our work. We produce hand-crafted, hand-printed, hand-bound books. We print limited editions (less than 500 copies). We’re looking for a design that reflects that kind of craftsmanship.

Should not have

• Too much detail. Shading. More than one color. Text only. Please know what a Cairn Terrier (a breed of dog) looks like. The designs that are being eliminated quickly have generic dogs.
