What file format will this need to done in?

Probably TIFF or PNG - something with an alpha transparency channel.

Meaning you want a transparent background? Can it be done a vector format?

I mostly meant, if the logo was a circle or something I wouldn't want a white square for the whole image (if we have this put on shirts or something).

It can be done in vector, and that is probably best.

Well, it doesn't have a gnome on it, but it looks clean. Have you gotten a chance to look at the whiteboard sketch and examples I attached?
