Illustration Design Brief
We put together a prototype image that communicates lifetime skin cancer risk. (see attached). We are looking for illustrators who can take make a new/better/cooler graphic that communicates this idea. It could be as simple as a superior illustration of the graphic we have or illustrators can propose a completely different idea. What should the illustration communicate?U.S. adults have a lifetime risk of developing skin cancer of 1 in 5. But we don't want to show 1 in 5; we want to show that number in a larger group. For example, in the attached illustration we show 20 in 100 people get skin cancer (i.e., 100 beach towels/umbrellas and 20 of them are red). Research has shown that people are more likely to accurately understand numbers like this when you convey them for larger groups (i.e., 20 out of 100 rather than 1 out of 5). U.S. adults also have a lifetime risk of 2.3% of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer (melanoma). In other words, approximately 3 in 100 people will develop melanoma in their lifetime. Ideally, a single image will convey both lifetime skin cancer risk (20 in 100) and melanoma risk (3 in 100). We will award a top three as follows: 1st place = $300, 2nd place = $250, third place = $200. We will also buy any design beyond 3rd place that we like for $100. For example, we purchased 24 designs in our last contest on Designcrowd. This research is supported by funding from the University of Utah.
