Book Cover Design Brief
Creation of the cover of a history book for Glyph Editions. Book size: 14 x 20,5 cm Collection "History and Society" We have provided three illustrations whose association on the cover seems very relevant. The book deals with the original character of the French Revolution: Catherine Theot, who has an indirect link with the conviction of Robespierre. Summary: Prophetess and necromancer, Catherine Theot claims from her adolescence to be "The Mother of God". Coming from Normandy she arrived in Paris around 1740 and quickly became a figure in pre-revolutionary and revolutionary Paris by her predictions. They will announce towards 1788 the fall of the Bastille, the dechristianization and the religious persecutions under the terror. Catherine Théot will evolve in the world of illuminism and occultism very fashionable in the eighteenth century. In the revolutionary turmoil Catherine Theot will be alongside prominent figures and many Freemasons. In particular the Duchess of Bourbon, sister of Philippe Egalité, the philosopher of Saint Martin, the former Carthusian Dom Gerle who will be his director of conscience. In 1793, Catherine Theot will be the subject of several denunciations that will lead the prosecutor of the town of Paris Chaumette to conduct an investigation on the "Mother of God". The investigation dismissed will be taken over by Guillaume Vadier, director of the Committee of General Security. Opponent of Robespierre, he foment a plot to overthrow his enemy Robespierre. Catherine Theot will become the central figure of the plot that will lead to 9 Thermidor. The establishment of the cult of the Supreme Being by Robespierre will be concretized by its celebration on 20 Prairial year II it will give the pretext to the anticlericals to overthrow the Incorruptible. After the fall of the Terror, Vadier will continue his investigation. It will emerge that Robespierre was initiated by the "Mother of God". The deposition to the revolutionary police by two servants of the mayor of Choisy-le-Roi is proof of this. This revolutionary period makes it possible to deal with the genesis of secularism, the clashes between spiritualists and anticlerics and atheists.
