Illustration Design Brief

This is a personal project, an illustration to remember a cat called Luna (meaning Moon) (see luna1.jpg and luna2.jpg).

A little background on Luna and her owner, Mary. Mary, a slim punk chick in her mid 20s, bought Luna as a baby. Mary is a space nerd and a philosophy teacher.

The illustration is that of Mary carrying the baby Luna in a backpack (see backpack.jpg) which looks like a spacesuit. I'd like the illustrated backpack to have a 360 spherical window (like spacesuit.jpg) and if appropriate, to actually look like a spacesuit with arms and legs, but still strapped to Mary's back like a backpack. This is up to you to decide whether a human looking suit is better or not.

I have done a sketch of Mary's outfit in sketch.jpg. She's wearing a t-shirt, denim shorts, punk boots (see punkboot.jpg for the flavor of the heels), punk gloves (see punkgloves.jpg) and she has a long enough hair to cover her neck.

The sketch in sketch.jpg is that of Mary's back. I'd like the final illustration to be a side profile of her. Wind should be blowing Mary's hair just enough forward as to cover her face. Her head should be slightly tilted forward (as if she's looking at the ground few dozen feet in front of her, as opposed to looking straight ahead) but it's not necessary. I'm not sure if Mary is walking or standing still. Your call.

The focus is Luna, so the illustration should be such that Luna gets the most attention. I'm not sure what Luna will be doing, but she could be looking up at the sky akin to an inquiring child with lots of questions about everything (remember that Luna is a baby here). It's important that Luna's illustration is not of a generic cat but such that one who has seen luna1.jpg can tell it's Luna and not some other cat.

In terms of details, the illustration should not be very detailed or use any kind of gradient (see details.jpg). It should also not be caricature of the characters (ie should have fairly realistic ratios) but like everything else, it's your call if deviations make a better overall outcome.

I'd like the final work to be in SVG format (vector) such that I can print it on various medium without losing quality, make slight modifications and change colors without having to trace boundaries. This brings me to color.

In terms of color, the punk outfit is usually all black with silver details. Mary's hair can be purple, black or any other color that matches the overall work with perhaps a few highlights here and there, taking into consideration that Luna is the focus, not Mary. Color of everything else is your call.

As mentioned earlier, I should be able to play with color of various things in the final work. I have quite a bit of skills in manipulating SVG files so as long as the work is done in vector, it should be OK.
