Thank you all so much! We're getting there! A little more info from the book... The game that the players are playing is called Global Domination (GD) and it is a VR game. Spoiler... They are actually captive within a VR experience, thinking that they are playing the game similar to the Matrix movie. I't a mirror within a mirror analogy. And, they are stuck in this VR experience until they can protect their own physical bodies and try to stop WWIII which they unwittingly created.
