Icon Design Brief

We are developers of the event entertainment product Mash Machine.
It allows people with no music experience to play music effortlessly without any mistakes. Players combine 40 sounds in 4 categories x 10 sounds (usually drums, basslines, melodies and vocals), by placing the blocks in and out of the play area. When blocks are moved to different zones, music filters and effects are applied on top.

We are looking for a system to clearly differentiate the 40 controllers for the players. While we currently use big instruments as symbols (Attachment 1, 2), they do not fit our new branding (attachment 3).

Output will be 40 square icons to fit Attachment 2. Feel free to move/modify position or font of the numbers on each square.

Requirements

Must have

• The design needs to be developed in Adobe Illustrator
• Icon + Background should fit in a square shape (see attachment 2)
• Clear differentiation of the 4 categories: namely by 4 original icons for each category
• Icons for the categories must have a hint / connection / relation to the 4 categories: drums, melodies, bass lines and vocals (first time players must understand categories)
• High contrast between categories: clear differentiation in both bright and dark environments is essential - the device is often played in nightclubs and pubs, where subtle differences are hardly visible.
• Clear differentiation of the 10 controllers within a category (we usually do with numbers, but we are open to other ideas)
• Must match our new branding (Check Attachment 3)
• Use colours from brandbook, can add black, white.

• Could be inspired by music symbols and notation

• Do not use any clipart or stock material
