Logo Design Brief
The city of Bergamo is preparing a design competition about some central areas, relating the public spaces’ renovation of the historical centre of the “Città Bassa”, called “Centro Piacentiniano”, and in particular the area of piazza Dante, place of great value historically, urbanely, architecturally, culturally, symbolically and strategically.
The Centro Piacentiniano is an iconic area of the "Città Bassa", an urban node joining the station zone and the ancient historical neighborhood, in “Città Alta’s” panoramic view of the skyline.
It is a city center planned on a rigid urban grid by the Roman architect Marcello Piacentini in the first years of ‘900, which has always represented an important attraction pole for the service and commercial activities, as well as a landmark for the tourist accommodation services, bars and restaurants. Characterized by the presence of historical buildings of great architectural and testimonial value, often used as equipment of general interest, today the area is characterized by the presence of many shops and abandoned places, and unfortunately degradation phenomena and social control problems often take place in it, because of its nearness to City areas densely populated during the daytime, or during temporary events (festivals, exhibitions, commercial initiatives ecc..) but object of abandonment outside these hours.
The goals of the architecture competition are the rethinking and the requalification of the Centro Piacentiniano, through the redevelopment of existing urban spaces, squares and public areas, in close relation to the presence of public and private property abandoned.
The challenge that this Competition is launching is to bring the Bergamo City Center to be experienced by residents and city users as a place of excellence, culture and history, by improving the quality, functionality and use of open public space.
The city of Bergamo is composed of two parts can be easily appreciated. There is the Città Alta (Upper Town), built up on the hills, which is the "city" by definition, and the Città Bassa (Lower Town), which is a lively financial, industrial and administrative centre of national importance. The two parts are separated, both physically and symbolically, by the powerful Venetian Walls, which were built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice in the second half of the 16th century to defend the city, which was the farthermost centre on the Mainland, close to the border with Milan's territory.
