Logo Design Brief
New Logo Design and Tag Line for a Re-Designed Museum:
We are a community museum in Birmingham, Michigan that has been working to re-invent ourselves and reach new audiences. We recently changed our name to be more inclusive and allow us to refresh our image and to be more responsive to the community. The former name was Birmingham Historical Museum & Park. The new name is Birmingham Museum. We don't want to be perceived as having just a bunch of dusty old stuff in a display case. We are more than that--we have great stories of local people, past and present, that we want to share with our community through our objects, photos, and archives.
We therefore revised our mission to be more people-oriented. It states that the Birmingham Museum will: "explore meaningful connections with our past, in order to enrich our community and enhance its character and sustainability. Our mission is to promote understanding of Birmingham's historical and cultural legacy through preservation and interpretation of its ongoing story." As part of that approach, we are seeking
-a new logo design (for print and electronic media) and
-a tag line that conveys our message effectively and to a broad audience of families, adults and elders.
-the specifications for ink color for digital printing and/or guidelines of how to best apply the new logo in various media and settings.
We have had green in our past logo and would like to see designs that incorporate at least some green, preferably with softer tones, and could have another compatible color that conveys warmth such as soft browns, blues, or other greens, etc. (See color selection) The final design should communicate inclusiveness and welcome, as well as a dynamic museum experience that helps visitors make connections (with others or finding personal meaning). The attached image files show our museum setting and the old logo, as well as a temporary new name image we are using until we get a new design.

Requirements
Must have
- -a new logo design (for print and electronic media) and
- -a tag line that conveys our message effectively and to a broad audience of families, adults and elders.
- -the specifications for ink color for digital printing formats and/or guidelines of how to best apply the new logo in various media and settings.
- The final design should communicate inclusiveness and welcome, as well as a dynamic museum experience that helps visitors make connections (with others or finding personal meaning).
- We have had green in our past logo and would like to see designs that incorporate at least some green, preferably with softer tones, and could have another compatible color that conveys warmth such as soft browns, blues, or other greens, etc. It must take into account our mission and the uniqueness of our community, Birmingham, Michigan.
Nice to have
- The logo design should have a long lifespan so it becomes part of our identity and brand over time. It should communicate that we are about people as well as objects, but that we are about how we are enriched by interacting with our history and culture. Should be simple but direct.
Should not have
- Should not have strong contrast or in-your-face approach. Should not be too quiet, either. Should not be too much 'of the moment.'
