Poster Design Brief

We are an amateur theatre group based in Geneva, Switzerland. We take pride in eye-catching posters for our shows, which are printed in various sizes.

Our budget is limited so we are not able to pay more than $30 for any stock images or art that is used on our posters. Please keep this in mind when searching for appropriate images.

This design will be for a play in March 2017. The play is called « Lost in Yonkers . »
It was written by Neil Simon, and it won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama.

The play is set in 1942 in Yonkers, New York, where a man has lost his wife to cancer and now has to leave his 2 teenage boys with his mother while he takes a job on the road to pay off debts. The grandmother is a tough, unemotional woman, an immigrant who had a hard life and who is hard on her children and grandchildren. The 2 teenage boys, 13 and 16 yrs old, have central roles. The boys make it their mission to earn money fast to help their father so that they can live together again.

What is required in the image are two teenage boys, somehow lost. The background can be a distorted cityscape (not Manhattan - this is a modest neighbourhood), a maze or some other place to get lost. The idea is to convey a comedy with a vintage feel to it. A possible idea could be a vintage comic or similar feel ; possible images could include an ice cream sundae, a gun, or a cane.

Most importantly, we want a design that will make people want to see the show. The play has plenty of laughs but also drama and tender, touching moments. The over-all colour scheme should not be dark.

Attached you will find a template for the poster. This simply has our group name and logo in the top right corner: Geneva English Drama Society presents
You may change the color of both the text and the logo, but please do not change the font, size, or location.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:
Any font or combination of fonts is acceptable. The largest text should be the play title. The author's name must be at least 50% of the title font size.

For this competition, we would like the version with A3 proportions, which will also be used at F4 (89.5 x 128 cm) and A5 sizes (14.8 x 21 cm). Therefore, no text should be below 9pt at A5.

However, from the winning designer we will also need repurposed sizes of the same design. Here is a comprehensive list of the sizes we will need.

1) A3 print poster. Artwork should be 300dpi, CMYK, sent with a 1mm bleed all round, to specification PDF/X-1A:2001. We will need this image in PDF format in addition to the default Designcrowd formats.

2) Facebook advert picture. 1200px by 628px, RGB jpeg. This must comply with Facebook’s restrictions on amount of text, which is no more than 20% of area taken up by text.(https://www.facebook.com/ads/tools/text_overlay).
Because of these restrictions it is sufficient to include just the title and the author's name in this version.

3) Facebook cover picture: 851px by 314px. RGB jpeg. It is sufficient to include just the title and the author's name in this version.

4) Web banner. 1000px by 300px. RGB jpeg. This version should include just the main image(s), no text..

5) F4 (89.5 x 128 cm) print poster, 300 dpi, PDF format.
