Illustration Design Brief

We need a SERIES of black and white line illustrations for a book we are producing.

The book is a guide for parents in the baby’s first year. The content is rather dry with a lot of text and the purpose of the illustrations is to provide a little light relief. The illustrations therefore need to be FUN but not to the point of becoming overtly cartoonish.

It is very important that the illustrations capture the EMOTIONS of the mother, father and baby in the situations described by each brief, for example, contented, fussy, screaming, exhausted, etc.

It is preferred that the illustrations have a pen or brush, hand-drawn feel about them rather than be obviously computer generated.

The competition to choose an illustrator will consist of one illustration to a set brief.

Competition brief:
Mum and dad on a couch, chair or bed looking sleep deprived - baby smiling.

Details for rest of project:
The chosen illustrator will be given full briefs for the rest of the series, which will consist of:
4 Section Openers
17 Chapter Openers
Front cover with colour (We are debating using a cover photo instead, so cover illustration not confirmed)
Back cover with colour (Can be re-use of chapter opener with added colour)
Total budget $2000

Plus

Up to a maximum of 30 smaller scatter illustrations of a more technical nature,
i.e. how to fold a nappy.
Budget $30 each.
Quantity of scatter illustrations to be confirmed.

The book size is 156mm wide x 234 mm high.

The section and chapter openers would need to be between half page and full page with allowance for headings to be added. It would be nice if they had a bit of a BACKGROUND WASH here and there to add a bit of detail and greyscale.

The scatter illustrations will be approximately quarter page or smaller.
No background wash.

Some examples of the illustration briefs are:
1. Mum in bath with a cup of tea in hand.
2. Mum pinning list on front door.
3. Mum walking baby with pram.
4. Mum and dad with baby at the airport with luggage.

The deadline for completion of the entire project is 20 November 2013.

The illustrator will be acknowledged on the imprint page of the book, but not on the front cover.

We would need the copyright assigned to us so we have the freedom to use the illustrations for the book, website and marketing/promotional material as desired.

Accepted file formats are: ai, eps or 300ppi jpeg

Note that I work part time and will only be responding to questions between 9.30am–3pm Australian time.
