Illustration Design Brief

I need between 8-20 simple black and white cartoon images for a kids coloring-in mobile app. The app is religious-themed, and images should cover some or all of the following topics:
- Love
- Kindness
- Service
- Sharing/Giving
- Honesty
- Respect
- Integrity
- Faith
- Repentance
- Trust
- Prayer

Possibly also:
- Baptism (immersion)
- Tithing
- other Christian topics

These illustrations can include people, animals or other objects, but must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Images may be Christian-themed, but should not include halos or the cross. If you opt for traditional Christian themes, Christ and his ministry should be the focus, not the crucifixion. The virgin Mary should only be used in the context of a stable-themed Christmas image (if at all).
- Non-Christian images will also be accepted if they meet the other criteria
- Ideally each one should teach a principle or tell a story (eg. bible story, proverb, etc). They do not have to be related to each other.

Examples:
- Moses parting the red sea
- Daniel and the lion's den
- The widow's mite
- Appreciating nature
- "The golden rule"
- Showing kindness

Quality OR quantity could win this: there are 3 judges, myself, my daughter (6) and son (4).

Winner may be contacted for further work of a similar nature.

Updates

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all those who have contributed to date.  Just a note - the "flood fill" factor is extremely important.

The ultimate test (in terms of how useful images are) is:
 - Using a bitmap at the full resolution (1024 x 768 or thereabouts) flood fill areas of the image with colour one at a time.  The entire image should be able to be filled by clicking on larger spaces.  If there are small pockets that you can't EASILY click on, then they will be even harder on a touch screen.

 - scale the image down to 640 x 480, and perhaps 480 x 320 (extreme example), and retry the flood fill test.  Often at these resolutions, areas that were filled correctly in the high res image no longer fill properly.

NOTE: I'm not saying every image must work flawlessly at every resolution.  But please consider this in your designs, it's a very important factor, and a key reason your design will be eliminated.

If you do have small pockets, consider:
 - filling it with black
 - making it larger
 - joining the area to a larger fill area, where it makes sense to do so

Hope that helps!
Paul

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing some great designs here, thanks everyone for contributing!  I've just added a $100 2nd Place reward because I'm really happy with the quality of submissions and I can see it's going to be a difficult choice!  If you still have a design that hasn't been eliminated, you're definitely in the running.  Just a reminder that I will require a minimum of 8 sketches from you, and make sure you read the Requirements and Updates sections carefully.

Thanks again -
Paul

Hi everyone,

Great submissions thanks!  I'm really happy with most of the designs to date. If you have already submitted a designs that have not been eliminated then you're currently in the running.  If not, please submit in the next day or two.

Please note that I misunderstood the competition process and didn't realise there was a revision phase after choosing the winners.  Because of this, I don't need all submissions prior to closing.

However, PLEASE let me know HOW MANY designs you are committing to complete if you win.  I will take this into consideration when choosing the winners.  I will hold the winners (first and second place) to their commitment to produce all designs to a similar standard before the payment is released.

Thanks,
Paul

Requirements
Must have
  • Because it is a coloring app, the cartoon images must be well defined, have thick lines around fillable areas (approx 4px or more), and be well segmented into areas that can be flood-filled with a flat color. The flood fill code sometimes spills if there is only 1-2px between fillable areas (depends on image scale).

Images must be positive, child-friendly (perhaps ages 2-6), clear and uncluttered.

Images must be landscape, 1024x768, 2 color PNG or BMP

Consider: If the image is scaled down to 3" diagonally (size of a small smart phone), will any of the fill areas be hard to tap? Keep it real simple!
