Logo Design Brief

We need a logo (we have never had one before) for Belfast Argentine Tango Society (BATS). We have around 100 active members and are a not for personal profit organisation, which promotes dancing tango in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK.

Our website is: http://tangoinbelfast.org/ and for our annual festival website see: http://www.belfasttangofestival.co.uk/

We hire top teachers from Buenos Aires to give weekly classes. We also run practice sessions twice a week, and a Sunday Cafe, all year round.

Tango is said to be the world's hardest dance to learn. It offers great fun, fitness, friendship and challenge. Once you learn tango you can dance anywhere in the world, so perfect for those who travel for business or pleasure. The mental concentration tango requires means it perfect for relaxing, and reducing stress. The final design should be simple and positive, that can be used on all sorts of media: T shirts, website, banners, flyers etc.

Hi, Thank you for your submission.  I have been checking how much it would cost to use the different logos in embroidery, vinyl and print on different shirt types; also how they would look at a small size of around 90 mm * 60 mm on a shirt.  Cost is driven by the amount of stitching or vinyl used - this suggests ruling out logos with backgrounds, shadows, and larger, solid figures.  Readability is related to simplicity of design and as few words (suggest two) as possible. Absolute maximum of 3 colours is practical, although technically feasible to have 12 colours, but one or two colours is best for less cost and better readability.  From informal tests initials (BATS, BT) are just not understood, so not working.  Summary, to be usable: simple dynamic design, one or two colours, two - four words max.  The designs that have clear silhouettes with a strong connection suggested between the couple may work better.  Prefer the dancers do not wear hats as hats are not normal wear for tango.

Hope this helps, best wishes, Peter

We received over 100 logos but their quality was not good enough to use, so we have reopened the contest.

The design we need MUST have the following components:
A simple compelling graphic evoking Argentine Tango.  Please note Ballroom Tango, Salsa, Flamenco etc will not be acceptable.  It must be easy to see and understand in a glance when 3 inches (around 7 cms) square, but also usable in a 4 metre large banner.

Please see our existing website tangoinbelfast.org and FaceBook page: Belfast Tango for examples of images.  There are also hundreds of videos on YouTube of Argentine Tango dancing.  A good design really needs to understand the feel of the dance.

It must be low cost to use with embroidery on a shirt, vinyl and print.  Therefore no background, shadowing, or two tone letters.  Maximum 2 colours, but 1 would be easier to use.  A splash of red may work well but open on this.  Make sure the shape of your overall design will fit easily into a square or rectangle, not bits dangling all over the place that waste space and lack overall coherence.

The website will be: BelfastTango.com  Useful to have this as part of the logo.

Consider including a 'benefit' or 'strap line'  Has to be only a few letters to keep clarity.  Words such as: Enjoy, Join, Dance, Embrace, may well work to position why a person should join us.

From looking at embroidered samples, the finished product could be gold stitching on a blue shirt.  So consider different shirt colours as your background colour.  But a coherent composition in black on white is the priority now.  We can then select a logo colour to match available clothing colours.

In conclusion: to create a good design it would seem essential to immerse the designer in images of the dance.  It would also be useful to actually see the dance live (tango groups in most cites now) and to talk to the dancers.  Consider the cost and readability of using your logo - not only on a computer screen, but putting it on clothing.  Just throwing clip art together is not enough, so don't waste your time doing this. You need a feel for Argentine Tango and the people that dance it, to create a design we can use for 20 years.

Hope this helps, Peter

Requirements
Must have
  • Clear and simple, so conveys a positive image instantly. Able to use it for many years to come. People know what it is without having to ask a question.
Nice to have
  • Clear, simple colours so can be used on a variety of media and at different sizes, from small coin size to big display banners.
Should not have
  • We have had T shirts simply with 'BATS' written on them. This was not successful as it confused people who saw them. We would not rule out a bat theme, (e.g. bat with dance shoes, or flying dancing bats) but must avoid looking like a Halloween motif.
