Poster Design Brief

We need a poster design for our 1920s vintage circus, 2013 tour.

The circus is called 'Chaplin's Circus' and is a circus concept inspired by the work of Charlie Chaplin. The finale of the show is a human cannonball act, where Charlie Chaplin is fired out of a cannon across the Big Top.

Other headline acts include an illusionist (Top Hat, tail-coat etc) and a high wire act (female).

The poster must have an authentic vintage feel and yet be eye-catching by modern standards.

Please leave a blank area at the bottom of the poster where we can insert location information and booking details (e.g telephone numbers, price info etc.)

More information:

Chaplin’s Circus will be a narrative-driven behind-the-scenes portrayal of a 1920s travelling circus. The audience will be made to feel that they are seated back-stage, during a live performance. Charlie Chaplin (played by the Charlie Chaplin imitator who was used to model the waxworks at Maddam Tussauds) is the tramp of the circus and the only character able to break the fourth wall; it is his circus that the audience are watching.

The finale routine:

In an attempt to keep ahead of its rivals the Circus has secured the world’s first ‘human cannon’ from inventor Orville Wright. It happens to be delivered during the performance, but without a willing ‘cannonball’! The ring-master, keen to add the effect to that evening’s performance, forces Charlie to become the Human Cannonball! When the cannon explodes, in a ball of flame, everyone fears the worst; however, as a final twist, Charlie appears on the other side of the Tent, totally unharmed.

Requirements
Must have
  • Charlie Chaplin inspired theme

Reference to the fact that the show features the world's most famous living Charlie Chaplin impersonator (see newspaper clippings attached) You can also see more info at http://www.charliethe2nd.com/

Reference to the fact that the show features a Human Cannonball Act (e.g. http://rlv.zcache.com/vintage_circus_poster_human_canon_ball_circa_1879_postcard-rdd54ab4faf8b4f7e90088b220f9235ca_vgbaq_8byvr_512.jpg)

Everything in the Circus (including props, costume, lighting microphones etc.) is authentic 1920s and it is important that this is reflected in the design.
Nice to have
  • Our show features a vintage Austin car (the kind that Chaplin used to drive!) see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/Vintage_Austin_Car,_Kew_Bridge_Steam_Museum.jpg
