Logo Design Brief

We need a logo for a new online media organization called "RenewATL."

Our mission: To inform businesses and residents of Atlanta, Ga., who are interested in the sustainable built environment, and to build that community. Our audience: business people, policymakers, advocates and citizens who care about metro Atlanta's sustainability. Our subject matter: clean energy, green building, smart growth, transportation (esp. transit), and water. We publish original journalistic articles, accept user-generated content, produce video, provide events, and have features to engage and involve our members/audience. We are funded through banner ads, sponsorships, and custom content.

Logo specs: The logo must be flexible enough to use on business cards, our website header, favicons, ads, banners, and a variety of promotional materials. All things being equal, we'd prefer both square and horizontal versions, although we're open-minded to just a square one (when I write "square," I mean a logo that would fit into a square, not necessarily one that's shaped like a square).

Spacing: You can either leave space or not leave space between "Renew" and "ATL." Capitalization: Please feel free to capitalize or lower-case the letters as is fitting (note that "ATL" is a popular abbreviation for "Atlanta," pronounced by spelling out the letters [A.T.L.].

Vibe: We want to convey innovation, freshness, renewal, sustainability, as well as a sense of a we're-all-in-it-together type of movement.

Nice to have

• We've played with one concept already and are curious whether someone might find a way execute it well: A rising sun on a blue-sky field with the word "renew" on the blue field and the letters "Atl" silhouetted on the sun; there are a lot of aspects of this scheme I like: strong typography for "Atl" or "ATL" might be used evoke to a infrastructure/construction/girders, the sun evokes solar energy, the blue sky evokes clean.
  
  Another concept we've discussed would incorporate the mythical Phoenix, which has been used as a symbol for Atlanta because Atlanta was burned to the ground 150 years ago.
  
  Please feel free to use these ideas as starting points, or to go with something entirely fresh.
