Logo Design Brief

Require a Logo for a new musical group.

- Must evoke the artistic style of the group
- Must convey that the group is professional, not local/amateur
- Must be easy to read and visually appealing
- Probably best to be designed by someone who is a musician, or an enthusiastic music fan very familiar with American and British rock 'n roll/punk/alternative music from the 1970's to present.

Musical Style: The band is both traditionalist and progressive:
The foundation is in deep respect for the great traditions of rock n roll, with influences such as the Doors, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and rockabilly. Plus, some punk and 80's new wave such as Joy Division, the Clash. There is a bit of 90's style British psychedelia (My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead) and Lo-fi techno (Portishead, Beck, PJ Harvey). Jazz and 70's funk references happen too, here and there.

Note to Designers - IF you know who most of those musical artists are, or better yet, you understand both their music AND their visual/graphic style - you could be the right person for this.

If you perceive "American Idol" as rock n roll, this is probably NOT the right project for you.

I'd prefer to have a few submissions from designers who are right for the project as opposed to many less appropriate submissions. Quality, not quantity.

The band is in the early stages, and we do not currently have any formal studio recordings of the music. If you are interested, I will send you some work-in- progress demo recordings, to give you a real window into the creative space.

I used to play with this very successful Canadian band, a long time ago http://www.headstonesband.com/. My current music is more melodic, intellectual and artistic than these guys.

I have a strong interest in Native American religion and culture, and shamanism in general. The power of nature is an ongoing theme. Feel free to hint at or imply this sort of thing.

The Name of the Band is "Low Frequency Angels" - chosen for the following reasons: "All humans are multidimensional beings (Angels), represented in 3D form (Low-Frequency). We are all beautiful yet imperfect. The phrase "Low Frequency" also implies Lo-fi artistic sensibilities (think minimalism, Black and White movies, early Johnny Cash or old crackly blues recordings).

Please DO NOT make direct literal visual references to "Angels" in the Christian sense - we are trying to downplay that aspect of it. We are a little more earthy and pseudo-pagan :-)

If you really do a great job on the logo, and are interested in future collaborations, we'd love to have an ongoing partnership with a graphic designer for future posters and CD design.

Requirements

Must have

• Grit, rawness, subversiveness, confidence, honesty.
  
  

Nice to have

• A logo that lends itself to an alternate abbreviated version i.e. "LFA" would be great.
  
  Color-wise, black is good (obviously). Ambers, sunset colors, etc. may make good accents, shadows or highlights. Open to your ideas for colors, but it has to look tough and fairly serious.

  This is a call for a Logo/typeface for the band name only, not a full poster, so I have included these images to help give a sense of our artistic perspective. If you feel inspired to create a full poster style image to go with the logo, I would also be interested in that.
  

Should not have

• NO pictures of "Angels" or literal, obvious Christian imagery like crosses etc. The word "Angels" should not be more prominently featured than the words "Low Frequency".
  
  Random imagery not related to or referenced in the brief is unlikely to work. (Unless you came up with something really awesome and creative that I may have missed. )
  
  Please do not use light sunny colors like pinks, lime greens etc.
  
  Please no Harley Davidson style crests or blatant tattoo imagery. These things can be hinted at or used for inspiration, but they are a bit tired and unoriginal in my opinion, unless they are done exceptionally well.
