Logo Design Brief

We are a company specializing in SCUBA diving decompression and planning software. The name "FreePhase" refers to the fact that our products track not only dissolved gases in the body, but also actual bubbles (in the "free phase").

Our customers are technical decompression divers, which is to say they're not the typical cruise ship or beach resort divers. Thousands of dollars of training and equipment are needed to get to the point where someone needs our software, so avoid anything "cute" or "beach" or "fun".

Some general themes that might prove useful:
"scientific": at our core, what we are doing is bringing a newer and better decompression model to the marketplace. Without some fairly hardcore physics and math, we would just be practicing voodoo.

"risk management": All technical diving is inherently riskier than recreational diving. (That's not to say that it's not fun or it's all commercial diving.) Our customers are willing to accept more risk in order to perform extraordinary dives. We manage that risk, allowing the diver to know with a greater certainty what is possible and safe.

"professional": We have long experience as software consultants (and as divers/instructors). We want to convey to the viewer that we know what
we are doing. Anything "cute" or "fanciful" is to be avoided. "clever" or visual puns are fine.

"small bubbles": Our algorithm relies on keeping what few bubbles are in the diver small. At the same time, we would like to put this on polo shirts or hats, so nothing that requires a ridiculous DPI.

I have attached a sample decompression dive profile that you may wish to incorporate as a motif. I have also included a graph of tissue compartment saturations over the course of a dive. We have not been able to turn these into great logo ideas, but that's why we're math nerds instead of great designers! (If the dive profile is used, take out the flat spots on ascent and make it a continuous curve or spline.)

UPDATE: 17 July: I have attached a third file showing a typical technical diver in horizontal profile. Fourth attachment shows two divers on a decompression line. It's at a bad angle, but typically the line is 20-45 degrees off vertical due to currents.

Target Market(s)

The target market is technical divers. These are very experienced and have spent a good deal of time and money getting to the point where they need to use advanced decompression software.

Additionally, they are engaging in more risky diving than regular, recreational divers. Therefore they look to us to keep them safe, but also to enable their risk-taking. Think "extreme sports" minus the energy drinks, and skewing a little older... maybe 30-45 years old. Typically male, but not at all exclusively.
