Logo Design Brief

The brand, ‘suzy hausfrau’, began as a pseudonym for a blog (www.suzyhausfrau.blogspot.com). This blog will be significantly revamped in line with the developing business, and remains an important part of our online presence. However, the themes that have been constant in the blog over the last couple of years will remain.

The name 'suzy hausfrau' is now also being used as a brand for an online retail business. To read what we think suzy hasufrau, the brand, is about you might like to look at the 'about us' on our store website, (www.suzyhausfrau.com.au ). This may also give a sense of the design 'feel' we are looking for.

Eventually there will be several ‘stores’ under the suzy hausfrau banner, all geared to providing products to customers interested in being creative in the home. The first ‘store’ stocks yarn and accessories for knitting and crocheting etc. This store is stocking exclusive European yarn, sourced mainly from Scandinavian and northern European suppliers. This was not a distinct ploy to capitalize on the hausfrau connection, but a move toward supplying a hitherto unavailable product in Australia.

The name ‘suzy hausfrau’ started as a playful twist on the idea of ‘suzy homemaker’, i.e. a woman who strives to create a beautiful home and pursue craft based hobbies such as knitting, sewing, cooking, baking bread and making jam. There is some irony attached to the concept in that this is an ideal life for some women who, in reality, maybe a professional with a demanding job and children who can only indulge in her hobbies in her spare time. Nevertheless she’d rather be making the perfect cup cake and attending to her children than dealing with the office grind. We wish to cater to both types, the hausfraus and wanna-be hausfraus

The logo requires two layers - in the first instance it needs to represent ‘suzy hausfrau’ as the pseudonym for the person behind the businesses. The blog will serve as a tool for keeping the customer connected with the real suzy hausfrau and her life. The second layer is that suzy hausfrau the brand is to be applied to various home-related subsidiary ‘stores’ as they are progressively rolled out. So while the present store is ‘suzy hausfrau – the yarn store’ the next store might be ‘suzy hausfrau – the preserving store’, which might supply jam-making equipment etc. We want to be able to easily modify the suzy hausfrau logo to each new situation.

Updates

Hi,

Just to let you know we've revised the brief a little to make it a bit less long winded. Hopefully it will also make it a clearer.

Target Market(s)

The target market is almost exclusively women, with a specific focus on those attracted to crafts. Women living in the country will likely be an important market, though by no means the exclusive one. Our customer is drawn to quality and in regards to the first ’ store’, will be drawn to fibres that are unique, beautiful, natural and often from small European boutique suppliers. The women may be ‘stay at home’, but are more probably working and harbouring a yearning for a ‘simpler life’. Regardless of education they will often be intelligent (knitters are often adept at mathematics for example) and part of the attraction of craft is the challenge of perfecting their chosen pastime (and they are frequently looking for fresh challenges).

Requirements
Must have
  • In broad terms I am drawn to a clean, crisp, and simple, and in particular what might be termed a Scandinavian style. The off the shelf website design that I have started with reflects this (www.suzyhausfrau.com.au). These websites also give some sense of the feel I am looking for:

    www.hopandpeck.bigcartel.com
    www.pickles.no
    www.chezlarsson.com
    http://hello-naomi.blogspot.com/
    http://saidosdaconcha.blogspot.com/

    Requirements:

    1. Logo for ‘suzy hausfrau’ and a variant, ‘suzy hausfrau – yarn store’, that is able to be registered as a trademark.
    2. The logo should be able to be used as a header for retail websites and blogs (the website requires 750 pixels wide x 80 pixels high).
    3. A logo ‘button’ to be used on websites to link through to our internet site/s, for example ‘pay per click’ advertising.

Should not have
  • I am NOT looking for checker table cloths or aprons, or some sort of stylised 1950s housewife, though a slightly ‘retro’ feel is not objectionable.
